Growth of Slavery in the Capitalist World

This matter is highly underreported, but according to a recent study, there are now more slaves in the world than at any time in human history. The number is estimated to be 27 million.

And more significantly, the value of a slave is less now than it was in 1850. In America in 1850, a slave was worth the equivalent of $38,000 today. But today, a male slave laborer is worth only 40-$100 dollars. An HIVfree female is worth $1000.

The greatest motivation for slavery now is prostitution.
1.Human trafficking is the third most profitable criminal activity, second after drugs and arms trafficking
2.An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 men, women, and children are trafficked yearly across international borders, and the trade is growing (Department of State. 2004. “Trafficking in Persons Report.” Washington, D.C.; U.S. Department of State.)
3.Of the 600,000-800,000 people trafficked, 70 percent are female and 50 percent are children; the majority of these victims are forced into commercial sex trade (ibid)
4.The number of U.S. citizens trafficked within the country each year is estimated 200,000 American children at risk for trafficking into the sex industry (U.S. Department of Justice. 2004. 5.Seventy percent of internet sex shows are in the United States, of which women and children are forced into sexual acts while being taped.
6.As many as 7,000 Nepali girls as young as 9 are sold annually into India’s red-light districts, 200,000 in the last decade.
7.Afghani women are sold into prostitution in Pakistan for around 600 rupees – less than $4 a pound, depending on their weight.
8.About 50,000 Asian, Latin American and Eastern European women and children are trafficked into the United States for sexual exploitation, the going rate between $12,000 and $18,000 each.
9.Ten thousand children between the ages of 6 and 14 are in Sri Lankan brothels.
10.Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have become the sex centers for Western Europe, featuring women from the former Soviet Union.
11.About 1,000 women from the former Soviet Union became prostitutes in Israel in exchange for legal documentation.

Capitalism has shifted the vast bulk of resources and energy towards production, namely the production for Western powers. This has not allowed many poorer nations to develop self sufficient economies that allow for normal distribution of wealth. Instead, poorer nations have become beholden to the Capitalist powers, taking massive loans, complying with their economic reform policies, and allowing for systemic corruption.

Thus, as people in poorer nations have become mere cogs in the global capitalist machines. Both covert government plans And liberalization of trade according to capitalist standards have allowed for global criminal enterprises to flourish which allow for global drug and human trafficking.

But modern slavery also consists of domestic work and child labor.

"The most common form of human trafficking is sexual exploitation (79 percent) followed by forced labour (18 percent). Forced labour is detected and reported less because it is frequently goes unnoticed, especially in big cities.

Nearly four in five victims are women and girls. Including boys, 20 percent of all trafficking victims in the world are children, but in some parts of Africa and Asia's Mekong region, children are the majority.

The report also reveals that intra-regional and domestic trafficking are the major forms of trafficking in persons. "Criminals prey on their own kin, something even animals don't do."
