New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended on Tuesday a Florida pastor's right to burn copies of the Quran during a public demonstration on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Mayor Bloomberg speaks during a dinner in observance of Iftar at Gracie Mansion on Aug. 24, in New York City. At the dinner, Bloomberg defended the proposed Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero.

"In a strange way I'm here to defend his right to do that. I happen to think that it is distasteful. I don't think he would like it if somebody burnt a book that in his religion he thinks is holy," Mr. Bloomberg said during a news conference updating the public on the progress of rebuilding at the World Trade Center site.

"But the First Amendment protects everybody," Mr. Bloomberg said, "and you can't say that we're going to apply the First Amendment to only those cases where we are in agreement."

Terry Jones, pastor at the Gainesville, Fla.,-based Dove World Outreach Center, a 50-member Christian church, ignited a firestorm when he recently announced plans to burn copies of the Muslim holy book this Saturday to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The proposed public torching has already sparked protests in Afghanistan, and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, among others, warned Tuesday it could put Western troops there at risk.

Mr. Bloomberg noted in his remarks that burning copies of the Quran could put "our young men and women overseas and America itself in greater danger than it was already." Still, he said, a commitment to free speech means it must be permitted.

"If you want to be able to say what you want to say when the time comes that you want to say it, you have to defend others no matter how much you disagree with them," Mr. Bloomberg said.

In recent months, Mr. Bloomberg has become an outspoken advocate of a controversial proposal to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. There is "nowhere in the five boroughs of New York City that is off limits to any religion," Mr. Bloomberg said during a speech at an annual Iftar dinner at Gracie Mansion last month.

Iraq's prime minister has said the country is "independent" as the US formally ends combat operations.

In his televised address, Mr Maliki told Iraqis: "Iraq today is sovereign and independent.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the withdrawal marked "a change in our mission" in Iraq and that it was up to the Iraqi people to "write the next chapter in Iraqi history".

"We will be their ally, but the responsibility of charting the future of Iraq first and foremost belongs to the Iraqis," he said.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11137269

How can Iraq or any other muslim country be independant aslong as the ruling elite have been hand-picked by the colonialists. Innevitably, it will be the colonialists (America) who will be running Iraq from their very dwellings from where they plot and plan against the Ummah of Muhammad (saw)!

I hope the Ummah is not fooled by the garbage of independance from Maliki and his paymasters sitting in America!

I have a question however, what is the definition of colonialism and how has it changed from the past?

"Shocked, Hussain who had earlier talked about the Obama administration's resolve to partner with the Muslim world for winning hearts and minds, shot back: "I reject the conspiracy theories that are being floated.

Salaam aleikum,

this issue has exposed deep fissures within the American political right, most especially:

1. The opposition to it and its inherent racism against Muslims.

2. How the influence of the neo-conservatives and its allies dominates their thinking. They would only agree to a mosque if American missionaries were allowed into Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries to convert Muslims to Christianity.

3. How the idea of "reforming Islam" to make it compatible with American imperialism is inherently being promoted by building this mosque. This is from an Iraq war cheerleader and fervent supporter, closet neo-con, and apostate Muslim ("Nothing will be solved by searching for 'true Islam' or quoting the Quran. The Quran is a vast, vague book, filled with poetry and contradictions (much like the Bible)." and RAND Corporation supporter.

Here is what he recently wrote about in his most recent column as to why the Ground Zero Mosque should be supported:

"The debate over whether an Islamic center should be built a few blocks from the World Trade Center has ignored a fundamental point. If there is going to be a reformist movement in Islam, it is going to emerge from places like the proposed institute. We should be encouraging groups like the one behind this project, not demonizing them. Were this mosque being built in a foreign city, chances are that the U.S. government would be funding it."
I don't think its very revelatory except to show up the intense competition for access, funding and recognition that the Prevent policy created, as well as government sucking in several (Muslim) community advisors who seem to be working against each other....
Alhamdulillah this version of Prevent is over anyway; let's hope something better takes its place.

Preventing Violent Extremism: Reshaping Muslim Identity
A Critical Analysis of the UK Prevent Strategy

I have been forwarded this interesting report, a final year undergraduate dissertation which was awarded a first by the university this summer, which is definitely worth a read and forwarding to unsuspecting Muslims involved in PVE who have failed to see what PVE is really about.

The abstract here provides a good overview and the full report can be downloaded here.

Abstract

....Through the use of interviews with Prevent practitioners in Birmingham, I aimed to explore the details of this strategy and thereby uncover what is meant by the widely used terms ‘violent extremism’, ‘extremism’ and ‘Britishness’. Thereafter, I endeavoured to discover whether Prevent is being used as a tool to reshape Muslim identity. I found significant differences in the views of my interviewees regarding definitions of terms; there was a lot of confusion that existed when asked to define words Prevent practitioners were themselves using.

Furthermore, my findings suggested that Islam is being reformed through this agenda, even though this has nothing to do with preventing a small minority who use violence in the name of Islam. Overall, I found huge disparities in the views of Prevent practitioners, especially between the young ‘religious’ individuals who were more critical of the strategy, and those who worked more intimately with government. These differences largely appeared when discussing issues of Democracy and Shariah law, since people had different understandings regarding their compatibility and difference.

Nevertheless, I ultimately contend that the government is using Prevent as a means to reshape Muslim identity; though this is not apparent at face value due to the involvement of responsibilised Muslims in Prevent...

June 15, 2010
source: http://www.thenation.com/blog/blackw...-arab-emirates

Sources close to Blackwater and its secretive owner Erik Prince claim that the embattled head of the world's most infamous mercenary firm is planning to move to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Middle Eastern nation, a major hub for the US war industry, has no extradition treaty with the United States. In April, five of Prince's top deputies were hit with a fifteen-count indictment by a federal grand jury on conspiracy, weapons and obstruction of justice charges. Among those indicted were Prince's longtime number-two man, former Blackwater president Gary Jackson, former vice presidents William Matthews and Ana Bundy and Prince's former legal counsel Andrew Howell.

The Blackwater/Erik Prince saga took yet another dramatic turn last week, when Prince abruptly announced that he was putting his company up for sale.
While Prince has not personally been charged with any crimes, federal investigators and several Congressional committees clearly have his company and inner circle in their sights. The Nation learned of Prince's alleged plans to move to the UAE from three separate sources. One Blackwater source told The Nation that Prince intends to sell his company quickly, saying the "sale is going to be a fast move within a couple of months."

"It is nobody’s business where Mr. Prince (or anyone else) chooses to live. So I’m afraid I will not be able to confirm any rumors."
Blackwater spokesperson Mark Corallo

Mark Corallo, a trusted Prince advisor and Blackwater spokesperson would neither confirm nor deny the allegation that Prince is planning to move to the United Arab Emirates. "I have a policy on not discussing my client’s personal lives—especially when that client is a private citizen," Corallo, who runs his own crisis management and PR firm, said in an e-mail to The Nation. "It is nobody’s business where Mr. Prince (or anyone else) chooses to live. So I’m afraid I will not be able to confirm any rumors."

A source with knowledge of the federal criminal probe into Blackwater's activities told The Nation that none of Prince's indicted colleagues have flipped on Prince since being formally charged, but rumors abound in Blackwater and legal circles that Prince may one day find himself in legal trouble. Former Blackwater employees claim they have provided federal prosecutors with testimony about what they allege is Prince's involvement in illegal activity.

If Prince's rumored future move is linked to concerns over possible indictment, the United Arab Emirates would be an interesting choice for a new home—particularly because it does not have an extradition treaty with the United States. "If Prince were not living in the US, it would be far more complicated for US prosecutors to commence an action against him," says Scott Horton, a Columbia University Law lecturer and international law expert who has long tracked Blackwater. "There is a long history of people thwarting prosecutors simply by living overseas." The UAE, Horton says, is "definitely a jurisdiction where Prince could count on it not being simple for the US to pursue him legally."
The UAE is made up of seven states, the most powerful among them being Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Since 9/11, they have emerged as hubs for the US war industry. "Global service providers" account for some three-quarters of Dubai's GDP, while oil represents only 3 percent. "They have established themselves as the premiere location in the Middle East for offshore banking and professional services," says Horton, who has legal experience in the UAE. "If you have connections to the royal families, then the law doesn't really apply to you. I would be very surprised if Erik Prince does not have those kinds of connections there."
As a matter of policy the Justice Department will not discuss possible investigations of people who have not yet been charged with a crime.

(07-31) 04:00 PST Baghdad — 2004-07-31 04:00:00 PST Baghdad --

Fuad Rashid may be the only Sunni Muslim cleric in Iraq who defends America from his pulpit. Right now, however, he is making Lt. Col. Robert Campbell squirm.

Campbell, commander of a battalion in the Army's 1st Cavalry Division, visited Rashid's house to discuss neighborhood affairs -- but is starting to look as if he wishes he hadn't.

"You don't really believe that, do you?" Rashid cheerfully asked Campbell. "You don't really think you were sent here for democracy? That is so silly."

"But sheikh," Campbell spluttered, as Rashid segued into an extended rant.

President Bush is "too much," he continued, his eyes twinkling incongruously. The military's Iraqi translators are "all corrupt, bad men." Certain U.S. Army officers are "ugly." And American promises to repair the mosque's electricity generator? "I don't know, lies or what," he said scornfully.

Rashid is imam of the al-Qadisiya Mosque, the sole Muslim house of worship in the Green Zone, the 3-square-mile area in the heart of Baghdad that effectively remains under U.S. control. And despite the criticisms he had just leveled, he proudly calls himself the "only imam in Iraq who openly speaks in favor of the Americans."

"I love America," Rashid said, with passion. "Americans are so beautiful."

Resplendent in a cream-colored gown and a white gauze turban around his boyish face, the 40-year-old Rashid looks more like a Catholic nun than a Muslim cleric. The similarity is deliberate -- he readily admits that he models himself after Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Although Islamic doctrine considers Mary the virgin mother of a prophet - - a status almost as revered in Islam as it is in Christianity -- it is unheard of for a Muslim cleric to adopt Christian-style garb, much less a woman's.

Rashid says Mary appeared to him in three visions telling him to follow her. He adopted the style when he was a seminary student in Baghdad in the early 1990s, but it has become more pronounced since his mosque came under U.S. protection after the April 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Rashid's close-cropped beard is dyed blond, in keeping with his all-white image -- a sign of purity, he says -- and he wears patterned contact lenses.

Despite his unorthodox appearance, he is a powerful, eloquent preacher who advocates conservative social values. On one recent Friday, the Muslim Sabbath, Rashid preached to a crowd of about 150 worshipers -- mostly Iraqi government workers, along with several dozen foreign contractors, mainly Pakistanis and Egyptians.

With an actor's poise and pitch-perfect cadence, Rashid extolled the benefits of "love and democracy" and condemned "people who want to destroy what others are building" -- a clear reference to the insurgency. But he reserved his biggest lines for the evils of alcohol.

"A man who drinks is the same as a man who worships another god," he warned. "His mind will be troubled, he will be an animal, like a pig."

After the prayer service, worshipers seemed wowed by Rashid's showmanship. "He is very good," said one Pakistani truck driver. "He has a beautiful voice. "

Other Sunni Muslim leaders mention him with scorn. "We don't know him well, but if he is praising the Americans, then he has sold himself to them," said Mohamed Bashar al-Faidhy, spokesman of the Islamic Clerics Association, the nation's main Sunni alliance, which has steadily criticized the U.S. presence and gives tacit support to the anti-American insurgents.

Some Iraqis are harsher in their judgments.

"If he were anywhere else in Iraq, he would be killed," said one Iraqi man who visited the mosque recently and asked to remain anonymous. "And I would do it myself," he added, saying Rashid "gives a bad example." But Rashid is in the Green Zone, a well-guarded bubble of Americana in the heart of a hostile nation. Protected by U.S. tanks, 20-foot concrete walls and barbed wire, the zone holds thousands of U.S. troops and civilian workers, as well as the sprawling Republican Palace, where administrator Paul Bremer once ran the occupation and now U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte has his headquarters. Lawns are clipped and well-watered, women jog the streets in T-shirts and shorts, signs advertise hip-hop and salsa dance nights, and the only worries are the occasional incoming mortar round fired by insurgents outside the zone.

The compound also includes the homes of top Iraqi officials and Iraqi government offices. U.S. officials say they have no immediate plans to return the zone to Iraqi control -- a source of resentment for many Iraqis who see it as a symbol of continuing U.S. occupation despite the transfer of nominal sovereignty a month ago.

The al-Qadisiya Mosque is a striking ultra-modern building with sail-like wings, like the Sydney Opera House in Australia. It was built in the mid-1990s as the favored mosque of Hussein's presidential office, and its worshipers once included some of the regime's most powerful officials.
Before the war, Rashid was the assistant to the mosque's pro-Hussein imam, his main task singing the five-times-per-day call to prayer. After the war, the chief imam fled, and the Americans promoted Rashid to the No. 1 spot. Rashid speaks near-fluent English, which he says he learned by watching videos of his three favorite movies, "Gone With the Wind," "Love Story" and "The Bodyguard." "I love what's her name -- Whitney Houston? She is so beautiful, so pure. She is like (the Virgin) Mary, very clean."

Now, as Islamic conservatism gains strength throughout Iraq, Rashid revels in the fishbowl-like isolation of the Green Zone, and he avoids contact with other Muslim clerics. Whether he would be accepted at any other Iraqi mosque is an open question, he admits. "I'm more honest than the other imams," he said. "They like to lie, they are full of hate, they try to make trouble." Rashid lives next door to the mosque in a comfortable home surrounded by fruit trees. He has been married for five years to a woman 20 years his junior, although they have no children -- a rarity in Iraq.

During Campbell's visit, Rashid deflected Campbell's attempts to discuss a petition by local Iraqi residents for a loosening of the Green Zone's strict security policies.
Instead, he unleashed a barrage of criticism at his countrymen.

"Iraqis are all animals, 95 percent are looters," he said, referring to the wave of theft from government facilities after Hussein's regime fell last year that still continues on a diminished level.
"The people is monkeys," he said, his grammar faltering as the words came out in a rush.
Campbell, who considers Rashid a "good friend," could hardly get a word in edgewise.
"I like American freedom," Rashid went on. "I would like to go there soon, you know?"

Bosnia’s Grand Mufti had acted as “Serb informant,” say Srebrenica victims
By Zulekha Samad

source: http://crescenticit.com/news-a-analy...a-victims.html

A survivor of the Srebrenica genocide has made an explosive allegation against Rais al-Ulama (Grand Mufti) Mustafa Ceric of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Serbia’s war crimes. Hakija Meholjic, a survivor of the Srebrenica genocide, has said that based on documentary evidence, Ceric had for years acted as agent of the Kontra-Obavjestajna Sluzba (KOS), the Secret Service of the Yugoslav Peoples Army (JNA). In a formal request on May 13 to the Organizing Board for Commemoration of the 15th Anniver-sary of the Genocide in Srebrenica, Hakija Meholjic demanded that Ceric should not lead the janazah (funeral) prayers for the victims. Remains of the genocide victims are buried at Memorial Center in Potocari every year on July 11 as an integral part of the Commemora-tion of the victims of Genocide in Srebrenica.

Meholijic’s request was made after careful and painful consideration. He will be burying those parts of his father Husejn Meholjic’s body, and brother Sakib’s that have so far been found and identified. For instance, his father’s head is missing, chest bones are missing, one arm is missing, and feet bones are missing. The bones were collected from several “mass graves” (ditches) in which dismembered bodies of the victims were dumped and covered by dirt after the Serbs perpetrated their macabre ritual in July 1995.

Himself a survivor of the Srebrenica genocide, Meholijic’s request to bar Mustafa Ceric from leading funeral prayers was based not on personal grudge but on solid information. The Grand Mufti’s name was found on the list of documented collaborators with the Yugoslav army which was instrumental in perpetrating the Srebrenica genocide led by the indicted war criminal, general Ratko Mladic, who is still at large and believed to be protected by the Serb army.

The shocking revelation about Ceric goes to the heart of the problem in present-day Bosnia-Herzegovina. While the Serbian war of genocide against the Bosnians was heart-wrenching and people throughout the world, especially Muslims, were horrified by the brutal massacres and the West’s arms embargo against them that facilitated the genocide in the heart of Europe, revelations about the collaboration of some Muslim officials with the Serbian killers is even more shocking.

Representatives of the Association of Mothers of Srebrenica and Podrinje have given their support to Meholjic’s request that Ceric should not lead the janazah prayer for the genocide victims. They went further and demanded that all imams of the Islamic Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina whose collaboration with KOS was documented should also be barred from participating in the victims’ funeral prayers.

Every year survivors and family members of victims of the Srebrenica genocide commemorate July 11 as Remem-brance Day. The Serb army had slaughtered thousands of Bosnian men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995, a town designated as “safe haven” by the UN. A contingent of Dutch soldiers was supposed to have protected the town and its disarmed people but they re-mained passive spectators as the Serb murderers systematically butchered the Bosnians.

On this day, the remains of those that have been found in the previous year are buried after formal funeral prayers. While the ceremony is held to act as a healing process for those that lost loved ones in one of the most gruesome acts of genocide in contemporary history, it continues to revive painful memories. Often, only fragments of the remains of victims are found forcing relatives to make a painful decision: to bury these or wait until more bone fragments are discovered before a formal burial takes place. In the past there have been numerous instances when bodies have had to be dug up because more bone fragments of the victims were discovered through DNA analysis, itself a very laborious and tedious process.

On February 26, 2007, the International Court of Justice, in its legally binding judgment in the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina v. Serbia and Montenegro found that “Serbia has violated the obligation to prevent genocide, under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, in respect of the genocide that occurred in Srebrenica in July 1995.” The Court ruled that the government and institutions of Republika Srpska (the self-proclaimed Serb republic in Bosnia), especially its army (VRS) and the police (MUP) perpetrated the genocide in Srebrenica. It further ruled that Serbia had an obligation to prevent the genocide because its army was operting in Bosnia.

In 1992, the United Nations Security Council through resolutions 752 and 757 designated the rump Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) and the Yugoslav Peoples Army as aggressors against the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Based on these resolutions, Serbia and Montenegro were subjected to severe economic sanctions and finally lost their membership in the UN.

The victims’ families insist that any imam, no matter how high up in the hierarchy, who was an agent of the secret services of Serbia or the Yugoslav Peoples Army is complicit in the genocide in Srebrenica and should not be permitted to offer prayers for the victims. Regrettably, far from the healing process taking place with time, new revelations add to the anguish and pain of the victims’ relatives.

The Internet site JAVNO, (http://www.javno.ba/javno-teme/javno...ri-udbasi.html) came into possession of files with names and responsibilities of many civilian secret agents of the National Security Agency (Uprava drzavne bezbjednosti — UDB-a) under the control of Serbia, a sister organization of KOS. The name of Mustafa Ceric was found on the UDB list; his code name was “Vezir”. Names of a number of other imams who are today members of Islamic Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina, including copies of documents describing each imam’s activities and responsibilities as UDB-a agents are collected in a book titled Guardians of Yugoslavia — Collaborators of UDB-a in Bosnia and Herzegovina — Muslims, Ivan Beslic, Posusje, Bosna i Hercegovina, 2003. The original title of the book is: Cuv Ari Jugoslavije – Suradnici UDBe u Bosnia I Hercegovina – Muslimani.

"Yet this is not a global war against a tactic - terrorism, or a religion - Islam. We are at war with a specific network, al-Qaeda, and its terrorist affiliates."

LONDON: The use of an ageing Pakistani rock star by a London-based anti-extremism think-tank has led to calls on the newly elected coalition government to review the Labour government’s flawed strategy for tackling the real threat of violent Islamist extremism.

Salman Ahmed, the lead guitarist of the now defunct hugely popular rock band Junoon, is in the UK these days on the invitation of Quilliam Foundation to engage British Muslims about Sufi Islam.

Set up by two former members of the radical Hizb-ut-Tahrir, the Quilliam Foundation receives funding from both public and private sources to advise various government and private bodies on anti-radicalisation of Muslims but it has drawn criticism from both liberal and hardline Muslim groups.

The avowed aim of the prevent strategy is to get the local communities to work in partnership with their local authorities, police, education institutions, and others to stop people becoming or supporting violent extremists but calls for the whole scheme to be replaced with something substantial are already growing. The programme emerged after 2005 London terror attacks. The programme has been criticised by both Muslim and non-Muslim groups and it has been described as an elaborate way of spying on British Muslims communities.

Quilliam also gets money from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office for a project in Pakistan. An FCO spokesperson told The News that the funding for Pakistan project was “aimed at directly challenging the arguments of violent extremists with young people who are vulnerable to radicalisation”.

The self-proclaimed “rock’n’roll jihadist” Salman Ahmed has made a few media appearances and have spoken to a few educational institutions with significant number of Muslim students, where Islamic societies are operating.

Although, Salman Ahmed has been touted as a rock star for this event but the fact of the matter is the original line-up of Junoon is no more after it’s motor-mouth singer Ali Azmat quit the group to launch his solo career.

Salman Ahmed has made New York his permanent home and visits Pakistan on rare occasions. Quilliam and Salman used the latest tour to engage with mainly London students from middle and upper class backgrounds but they failed to hold engagements with disaffected Pakistani youth from areas such as Bradford, Manchester and Birmingham.

Questions have also been raised over the way the government has spent the taxpayers’ money by pumping into discredited community groups and Muslim societies. None of them has led to any significant progress on the ground while the radical Islamist groups continue to churn out their anti-western and sectarian rabid propaganda.

Commenting on the Quilliam-Salman tour, Douglas Murray, director of the Centre for Social Cohesion, said that those ready to blow themselves up were least likely to pick up an electric guitar. Murray said: “The new government has promised substantial cuts in public spending. There could be no better place to start than scrapping this and other Prevent initiatives.

“Taxpayers’ money should not be used to fund a free lunch so civil servants and journalists can sit around discussing how rock music can counter extreme ideologies. It doesn’t help British Muslims and it does nothing to strengthen national security.”

Speaking to The News, Salman Ahmed insisted he was very much relevant but he agreed the anti-extremism effort was failing to reach to the disaffected poor youth in the Muslim world, who are vulnerable to extremism ideology.

He said he was devoted to promoting the message of unity and positivity through music and to tell the world that there is no room for extremism in Islam. Salman said the Muslim youth in the West were searching for the identity and were finding it difficult to get answers for the questions boiling inside their minds. “I am a global citizen and I am only doing my job,” said the musician.

Geographically, Syria can be divided into four regions. A narrow fertile coastal plain runs along the Mediterranean border and extends inland to a narrow range of mountains and hills.
You will make a firm truce with the Christians (al-Rum) until you and they wage a campaign against an enemy that is attacking them. You will be granted victory and great spoils. Then you will alight in a plain surrounded by hills. There, someone among the Christians shall say: 'The Cross has overcome!' whereupon someone among the Muslims shall say: 'Nay, Allah has overcome!' and shall go and break the cross.
The Christians shall kill him, then the Muslims shall take up their arms and the two sides shall fall upon each other.
Allah shall grant martyrdom to that group of Muslims. After that the Christians shall say to their leader: 'We shall relieve you of the Arabs,' and they shall gather up for the great battle (al-malhama). They shall come to you under eighty flags, each flag gathering 12,000 troops." [approx. 1 million]

arrated Abu Hurayrah: Allah's Apostle (peace_be_upon_him) said: The Last Hour will not come until the Romans land at al-A'maq or in Dabiq[north of Aleppo( a city in northen syria). An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people on Earth at that time will come from Medina (to oppose them). When they arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans will say: Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from among us. Let us fight them. The Muslims will say: Nay, by Allah, we shall never turn aside from you and from our brethren so that you may fight them.
They will then fight and a third (part) of the army, whom Allah will never forgive, will run away. A third (part of the army), which will be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allah's eyes, would be killed. The third who will never be put on trial will win and they will be the conquerors of Constantinople. (and/or Rome)
As they are busy in distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, Satan will cry: The Dajjal has taken your place among your families. They will then come out, but it will be of no avail. When they reach Syria, he will come out while they are still preparing themselves for battle, drawing up the ranks. Certainly, the time of prayer will come and then ‘Eessa (peace_be_upon_him), son of Maryam, descends and will lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allah sees him, it will (disappear) just as salt dissolves in water and if he (‘Eessa) were not to confront them at all, even then it would dissolve completely. Allah would kill them by his hand and he would show them their blood on his lance.

By Zafar Bangash

In its long tortuous history, Europe has spawned many demonic ideologies — colonialism, imperialism, nationalism, Fascism, Nazism and Zionism, to name just a few — but while most others have been repudiated, at least theoretically, Zionism is still proclaimed as if it were a badge of honor. It would be difficult to find anyone calling himself a colonialist or imperialist these days, although there are plenty of countries peddling such ideologies under different labels; nor would one find anyone openly proclaiming to be a Fascist or a Nazi. Yet there are plenty of people that proudly claim to be Zionists. They come in all stripes: Jewish, Christian, atheist and (yes) Muslim.

It is important to clarify at the outset what Zionism, or to call it by its correct name, political Zionism is not. Despite strenuous efforts by its proponents, Zionism has little or nothing to do with Judaism, the religion of millions of people. True, Zionist ideology was first propounded by people of Jewish background — Theodore Herzl et al — but they were not religious at all. In fact, they considered Judaism as an impediment in their colonial enterprise. Herzl was a racist. He propounded the idea, in the wake of the Dreyfus affair in France, that Jews could not assimilate in other, primarily Christian European societies; they needed a separate homeland of their own. Even before Herzl announced his racist idea at the first Zionist Conference in Basel, Switzerland (1897), most rabbis had condemned political Zionism. The Philadelphia Conference of November 3–6, 1869 adopted a resolution that stressed the radical opposition between the universalist principles of Judaism and those of political Zionism.

So how did political Zionism, a racist colonial enterprise, succeed in establishing itself in the heartland of Islam despite strong opposition from leading rabbis and the indigenous population of Palestine? By turn of the last century, British and French colonialists were busy instigating revolts in the Middle East by buying the loyalty of Arabian tribal chiefs to use them against the Ottoman Khilafah. The toxic brew of Western colonialism, Arabian nationalism and political Zionism facilitated the imposition of the Zionist entity in Palestine through the Balfour declaration. On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Secretary Lord Arthur Balfour, in a letter to Baron de Rothschild, outlined the British government’s favorable view of establishing “in Palestine of a home for the Jewish people…” While Balfour stated, “nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine,” he deliberately ignored their political rights. That the overwhelming majority of inhabitants of Palestine were Muslims and Christians whose fundamental rights were being violated was of little consequence. In typical colonial style, Balfour promised the Palestin-ians’ land to European Zionist Jews. Unlike European racists that have had a long and gory history of persecuting Jews and other minorities in their midst, Muslims have not perpetrated any pogroms or indulged in inquisitions against religious or other minorities. Whenever Jews suffered persecution in Europe or Russia, they found refuge among Muslims, hence the presence of Jewish communities in North Africa, Turkey and Iran to this day. Yet European racists transferred their “Jewish problem” to Palestine.

The tiny minority of Jews in Palestine — 7 % in 1919 and even at the time of Israel’s creation in May 1948 through a scandalous vote in the United Nations General Assembly (November 1947) — the 30% Jewish population owned a mere 6.5% of the land. Yet it was given 56% of Palestinian territory. The rapid increase in Jewish population from 7% to 30% in 29 years (1919–1948 was not the result of natural growth; it was achieved through illegal Jewish immigration into Palestine. Even Hitler’s bloodbath did not convince the overwhelming majority of Jewish people to settle in Palestine. But Zionist leaders missed no opportunity to emphasize the importance of Jewish immigration to Palestine and lamented the lack of interest among European and North American Jews.

While Zionists denounce anti-Semitism and advance it as the principle justification for the creation of a separate homeland for the “Jewish people”, anti-Semitism is a twin of Zionism and needed for its survival. Herzl himself wrote,

“The Jews constitute a single people and cannot be integrated into other peoples. But they do become assimilated by any society if they find themselves secure in it for a long period. And that will never be to our interest.”

Thus, Herzl considered anti-Semites as indispensible allies in his quest to create the Zionist State in Palestine.

Today’s Zionists are no less eager to align themselves with racists and bigots. In fact many Zionists, especially in the US, are leading Islamophobes. In Palestine, the Zionists have not only expropriated Palestinian lands — today the Zionists control more than 93% of the original land of Palestine through theft, forcible occupation and other illegal means — they have also built roads, neighborhoods, communities and settlements reserved exclusively for the Jews. This is what apartheid South Africa had done, hence the designation of Israel as an apartheid state. The apartheid wall through which the Zionists have cut off Palestinian families and villages, stealing in the process more Palestinian land, caps it all. In a ruling handed down in July 2004, the International Court of Justice described Israel’s apartheid wall illegal.

Zionists are also masters at forging history. From the biblical claims that “God promised them this land” described as a “land without a people” (Palestinians are non-people in Zionist mythology), they have gone about uprooting Palestinian families from their homes and villages, often at gunpoint and frequently using it as well, to indulging in mass starvation and killings. By using the Bible as a real estate manual, ironically by people that do not even believe in God, the Zionists have added the myth of selective history to their spurious claim to Palestine. They claim that they have a historic link with Palestine because Prophets David and Solomon (Ç) ruled the Holy Land 3,000 years ago. It is as if in Zionist mythology, nobody existed before the Hebrew tribes arrived in Palestine — not the Philistines (hence the name Palestinians), the Moabites, the Hittites, the Amorites, or others — and subsequent to the 73-year rule of David and Solomon nobody else inhabited this land until the Zionists arrived to inhabit it (Ç). Such infantile claims are accepted at face value by the guilt-ridden Christian West that has historically perpetrated bloodbaths against the Jewish people.

Nothing could be more spurious than the claim of Christian charity assuaging the guilt of European Christiandom. Christian charity requires the good believer to give from what he has; nothing could be more un-Christian than to “give” stolen property to someone else. Similarly, nothing could be more personal than Christian morality, and so how is Christian dogma appropriated to govern the behavior of nation-states, who in reality wanted to solve the Jewish problem through expulsion? The fact of the matter is that Europe — and its bastard child, America — never stopped being racist; long before the Third Reich, the so-called “final solution” was discussed in Britain, and a thoroughly assimilated Jew, constrained most of the time to live in his own ghetto, was still not tolerable to the European racist. And so European racism set upon a course to solve two problems with one master stroke. Perceiving themselves to be locked in a life-and-death struggle with Islam, the real purpose of the creation of the Zionist State of Israel was to position a colonial beach-head in the heartland of Islam that would empty Europe of all its Jews and simultaneously act as a permanent impediment to peace and progress in the Muslim world.

Israel admirers never tire of reminding the world that it is the “only democracy” in the Middle East. Hitler’s Third Reich was also a democracy yet it perpetrated the biggest bloodbath in European history. The Zionists are busy replicating the Nazis’ horrible record in the Holy Land.

Bismillah Al-Raman Al-Raheem

The war on Islam
Salam.

For a good and honest dawa carrier he/she must describe the reality as it is because failure in doing so will result in misleading the ummah and we may end up displeasing Allah (swt).

It is healthy for us to review our understandings so that it remains accurate and the ummah will benefit insha-allah.

Big Question ( The war on Islam)

Is the “fear of Islam” and “extremism” being used by America to advance her foreign policy as opposed to a real concern in terms of awakening of the Ummah?

While one can perceive the spread of certain doctrinal ideas amongst the Ummah, are the kuffar exaggerating this to best suit their needs.

What role is Al-Qaeda playing in this? Bearing in mind that it was the US that decided to turn Al-Qaeda in to a super fighting machine! Does this confirm what was stated earlier that the Threat is hyped?

What about the constant attacks on Muslims in the Europe and America, is this the kuffar outburst of hatred of Islam or this is helping them with Integrating Muslims in their fold?

I guess whatever the answers are one cannot remain idle as sharia demands full implementation as well as there are indications that the ummah at large are more concerned with Islam then previously since the start of the decline. This on the other hand cannot and must not be exaggerated to win the hearts and minds.

I look forward to your valuable views and hope that we can continue to serve the Ummah in the way which pleases our Lord.

salaam aleikum,

Earlier I had mentioned how crude American propaganda was/is. A recent example of this is how the U.S. govt. set up and has now hyped up (via CNN ) an "al-Muhajiroun"/"Islam4UK" imitation called RevolutionMuslim. It was recently in the news for issuing veiled death threats to the creators of South Park for their 200th episode mocking Muhammed, Jesus, Moses, Buddha, and Scientology.

Apparently lost on all is that this "jihadist" group is run by a former Israeli settler Yousef al-Khattab (officially Joseph Cohen). His "Islamic" knowledge comes from having studied at an orthodox rabbinical school in Israel before becoming a settler in the occupied territories and terrorizing Muslims in Gaza. His American claim to fame was/is having set up this website (RevolutionMuslim) and standing outside streets in New York near the WTC to issue threats against anyone who disagrees with him and getting aired repeatedly on CNN as a possible warning of home-grown "radical American jihadism".

This is especially interesting in that the FBI has admitted and defends sending hundreds of informants into masjids across America to spy on Muslims, they don't arrest him or classify him as an "enemy combatant" simply because they don't want to infringe on his "freedom of speech".

Alhamdullillah many Muslims as well as non-Muslims are calling attention to the inconsistencies of his background and the U.S. government's actions in all of this:
We have a duty to stand for the truth, not only in belief (in terms of the aqeedah) but in actions. Exposing fraud and liars designed to discredit Muslims and Islam is part of the amr bil mar'uf wa nahy anil munkar "enjoining the good and forbidding the evil" which is the covenant Muslims make with Allah (swt).

Belgium today moved to the forefront of a campaign to restrict the wearing of the Muslim veil by women when a key vote left it on track to become the first European country to ban the burka and niqab in public.

The home affairs committee of the Brussels federal parliament voted unanimously to ban the partial or total covering of faces in public places.

"I am proud that Belgium would be the first country in Europe which dares to legislate on this sensitive matter," the centre-right MP Denis Ducarme said.

Daniel Bacquelaine, the liberal MP who proposed the bill, said:

"It is necessary that the law forbids the wearing of clothes that totally mask and enclose an individual. Wearing the burqa in public is not compatible with an open, liberal, tolerant society."

Also the Canadian province of Quebec last week introduced parliamentary measures to proscribe facial covering in public service employment – a move that enjoyed overwhelming public support in Canada.

Looks like Belguim is the latest country in Europe after the French & the Swiss, who is using the Burqa ban to scare Muslims into integration!

Mark Curtis is an independent author, journalist and consultant. He is the author of ‘Unpeople: Britain’s Secret Human Rights Abuses’ and ‘Web of Deceit: Britain’s Real Role in the World’, amongst other works. He spoke to NLP on the topic of British collusion with radical Islam.

Can you tell us what your new book - ‘Secret affairs: Britain’s collusion with radical Islam’ is about. What do you want to convey? What are your hopes for the book?

The book tells the story of the long history of British collaboration with radical Islam, including terrorist groups. 7/7 and the present broader terrorist threat to Britain is to some degree a product of British foreign policy – the bombings derived from a terrorism infrastructure established by a Pakistani state long backed by Whitehall and involving Pakistani terrorist groups which had benefitted from past British covert action. Throughout the postwar period Britain has covertly supported radical Islamic groups in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, the Balkans, Syria, Indonesia and Egypt, and the book aims to documents this drawing on the declassified British files.

British funding of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt began in the 1940s; the following decade Britain was conniving with the organization to kill Nasser (and also to overthrow nationalist governments in Syria). The reason for supporting Islamist organizations in the early postwar period was to counter popular nationalism, and Whitehall regularly sided with the Muslim Brotherhood throughout the Middle East. The covert war in Afghanistan in the 1980s in support of the mujahidin, which of course gave birth to al-Qaida, was simply an extension of already-existing British policy, but this was Whitehall’s biggest covert operation since world war 2 involving support for various of the Afghan/foreign groups fighting the Soviets (against some of whom Britain is now fighting in Afghanistan). Since then, there have been a plethora of similar operations involving Britain working alongside Islamist forces to counter enemies – Milosevic in Yugoslavia, Qadhafi in Libya, Saddam in Iraq, for example. To a certain extent, the policy is still continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan, although in different form – the British are now reliant on doing a deal with the Taliban to secure an ‘honourable exit’ for example, and in Iraq Britain de facto empowered Islamist militias throughout its occupation of southern Iraq.

I also think that the policy of “Londonistan” – allowing London to act as a base for jihadist terrorist organizing around the world – has been intimately related to securing British foreign policy goals. The book also documents Britain’s extremely deep strategic alliance with the two major state sponsors of radical Islam – Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Whitehall’s special relationship with Riyadh is one of the most remarkable features of postwar British foreign policy – the files show that Britain struck several investment deals with the Saudis in 1973 (around the oil price crisis) and basically appended the British economy to the Saudi at this time, from which Britain has never recovered.

The roots of all this are in the ‘divide of rule’ policies of empire when Britain used Islamic forces to promote imperial interests in various countries such as India, Palestine, Jordan and Yemen. The book tries to show how British collusion with radical Islam is intimately related to its postwar imperial decline - policy-makers have been expedient and pragmatic, lacking any moral compass, and have aimed to counter nationalist forces in a desperate attempt to uphold their power in a changing world.

Given the mainstream “war on terror” narrative the idea that Britain colludes with radical Islam will seem counterintuitive to many. How do you justify such claims?

The reality is often the exact opposite of mainstream discourse – in fact, this is not far off being a general rule, on major issues. The ‘war on terror’ has clearly been a war on targets specially designated by London and Washington, not a war on terrorism. After 9/11 the objective case for bombing Riyadh and Islamabad was as strong as bombing Kabul and infinitely stronger than bombing Baghdad. The fact that Britain’s allies have been at the centre of global terrorism for at least three decades is simply a fact, and is rarely mentioned in the mainstream. The US and British ‘war’ has left many of the real sources of terrorism in the world untouched. In my view, there’s a strong argument for promoting a war on terrorism (although I don’t like the word war), but if serious it would focus on some interesting places, including London.

When attempting to justify such policies it is often argued that Britain is supporting lesser evils. What do you make of such claims?

I’m not sure I completely understand the question since few attempts are made to justify such policies – they are either not known about or simply taboo. I’m not sure there’s much that is more evil than terrorism. When Britain connived with the Muslim Brotherhood to kill Nasser in the 1950s, the Brotherhood at that time had a secret apparatus responsible for various assassinations and bomb attacks in Egypt; their aim was to remove a basically popular (though far from angelic, and increasingly authoritarian) government. In the Kosovo war to defeat Milosevic, Britain was training Kosovo Liberation Army Forces linked to al-Qaida that the British government recognized were terrorists. And so on.

If foreign policy is not dictated by ethics what is it dictated by?

The collusion with radical Islam has been dictated by utility. Beyond the special relationships with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan – which are deep strategic alliances - Britain’s policy has been a matter of ad hoc opportunism, though it should be said that this has been rather regular. Time and again, the declassified planning documents reveal that British officials were perfectly aware that their collaborators were anti-Western and anti-imperialist, devoid of liberal social values or actually terrorists. Whitehall did not work with these forces because it agreed with them but simply because they were useful at specific moments. Islamist groups appeared to have collaborated with Britain for the same reasons of expediency and because they shared the same hatred of popular nationalism as the British.

Radical Islamic forces have been seen as useful to Whitehall in five specific ways: as a global counter-force to the ideologies of secular nationalism and Soviet communism, in the cases of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the major champions of radical Islam; as ‘conservative muscle’ within countries to undermine secular nationalists and bolster pro-Western regimes; as ‘shock troops’ to destabilise or overthrow governments; as proxy military forces to fight wars; and as ‘political tools’ to leverage change from governments.

When it comes to broader foreign policy, the declassified files are very clear – the two basic goals are to maintain Britain’s power status in the world and to ensure that the global economy functions in the interests of British and Western corporations. The latter goal has a variety of serious impacts, most importantly a grossly exploitative international trade and financial order which keeps hundreds of millions of people in poverty. These two goals are sometimes referred to as ‘national’ interests but this is of course misleading – they are the interests of a commercial and political elite. The policy making system in Britain is so undemocratic that decision-makers are simply able to get away with these policies.

Why is analysis such as yours so marginalised? Why do we not hear similar analysis from the mainstream media?

These are inconvenient truths that the elite have no interest in revealing. Snippets of reality are often captured in part of the mainstream print media (often buried within much longer articles with a misleading title), but they are often drowned out by a chorus of more convenient reporting. I say print media since television and radio news/current affairs are virtually completely totalitarian. The BBC, for example, is simply a joke, in my view; it is impossible to watch for anyone with a basic knowledge of Britain’s real role in the world except as a study of propaganda – to regard it as a source of information is simply delusional. Journalists working in the mainstream seem to me to be one of two kinds – there are those who absolutely know how the system works, but just feel they have no choice but to do what they can within it, and then those who literally do not understand that anyone could possibly believe they are serving an ideological function. There is some hope with the former, but the latter are invariably the editors.
